The Costa de Almeria consists of many isolated beaches and makes up about 20% of the whole coastline of Andalucia, stretching 220 km from San Juan de los Terreros in the north, where the Costa Calida begins, down through Almeria city to Adra, in the south, where the Costa Tropical of Granada province starts. Its most outstanding feature is its cloudless, bright sky and the mild climate. The beaches, towns, hotels, holiday properties, beachbars, campsites, restaurants and golf resorts of the Costa de Almeria have been made popular by the reliably warm and sunny weather and cheap flights to Almeria airport.
East of Almeria airport
In the north, just over the border from Murcia, is San Juan de los Terreros village with quiet beaches and coves which extend 15 km south to Villaricos, at the foot of the Sierra Almagrera. Golf, a marina port, watersports and beaches have made this area a popular choice for both holidays and for property sales. Between Palomares and Vera Playa is one of Europes largest nudist resorts, Vera Natura, with over 2 km of naturist blue flag beach, a naturist residential zone of over 2,000 apartments and a 4 star hotel. Beach developments extend along the coast in an almost unbroken line from Vera Playa and Puerto Rey to Garrucha, a thriving fishing town and port with a smart beachfront and a clean beach along the coast to Mojacar Playa: over 5 km of beaches lined with bars, hotels, restaurants, shops and cafes. Mojacar Playa has very few high rise developments and the majority of homes and holiday rentals, stacked on the hills of the Sierra Cabrera which lead down to the beaches, have a sea view. Inland within short driving distance of the beaches, the Sierra Cabrera shelter the smaller historic towns of Mojacar Pueblo, Turre, Cortijo Grande, Los Gallardos, Bedar and Antas. Macenas, a few km south of Mojacar, is isolated by rocky headlands and virgin beaches which continue 10 km south to Carboneras; a working town, marina and port with clean beaches. Despite having Europes largest water desalination plant, a large thermo electric plant and cement factory, both the level of urban development and the general atmosphere is less frenetic. A few km south of Carboneras is Playa de los Muertos, one of Spains finest beaches, in the beautiful Cabo de Gata Natural Park.

A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The stark landscape of the volcanic Sierra del Cabo de Gata plunges into clear, azure waters. Some of Spains most beautiful beaches are strung between coves and cliffs of considerable grandeur. Villages are scattered along the coast. Agua Amarga fishing village is an attractive collection of whitewashed houses standing on a protected bay. Las Negras is situated in a beautiful cove with spectacular scenery and beaches within walking distance. Rodalquilar, the administrative centre of the park, is an old mining town a few km inland. la Isleta del Moro, a small fishing village and beach has had many holiday homes built. San Jose is set in a small cove with a sandy beach boasting two ports, one for fishing and one for sports. Villas, countryhouses, chalets and apartments have sprung up to cater for holiday rentals and residents buying property here.
Golf In Almeria
Holiday rentals and properties are often located on or near golf courses of the Costa de Almeria. Marina Golf, Playa Macenas, Cortijo Grande Golf, Desert Springs, and Valle del Este Golf are close to Mojacar and Vera Playa resorts while Aguilan Golf is near San Juan de los Terreros. La Envia Golf, Playa Serena Golf, Alboran Golf (near el Toyo) and Golf Almerimar, are all with easy reach of the holiday resort of Roquetas de Mar.
Almeria airport and west
Between the village of San Miguel and the Cabo de Gata point are salt flats (Las Salinas de Cabo de Gata) separated from the sea by a 400 m sand bar providing an important habitat for both resident and migrating birds on their journey between Europe and Africa. The coast is mainly low and level, the beaches mostly fine, sandy and clean. Retamar has over 20 urbanisations with pools, sports trails, hotels and a stadium at el Toyo. Almeria airport is at el Alquian, 15 minutes drive from the provincial capital, Almeria which has many fascinating corners and varied gastronomic and cultural attractions. East of the city a massive, intensive horticultural area occupies the vast plains of salt flats and sand dunes at the foothills of the Sierra de Gador leading to the coast where the modern popular tourist resorts of Aguadulce, Roquetas de Mar, and Almerimar are hidden. The westernmost coastal town on the Costa de Almeria is Adra, sitting at the foot of the Alpujarras with a fishing port and beaches.
