Cantabria is an autonomous community with just one province (also called Cantabria). The capital is Santander which has a sea port (with ferries to UK and Eire). Cantabria is a mountainous and coastal region, with important natural resources:

The coast: a strip of cliffs extending just 10km away from the sea broken by estuaries,(rias) bays and coves. Santander and Suances are the largest of these.
The mountains: steeply rising and parallel to the coast and with fast flowing, erosive rivers. Liébana, Saja and Nansa, Besaya, Pas and Miera, and Asón-Gándara valleys have a mild but wet climate . Further south (into the Picos de Europa) the climate and vegetation become alpine.
Embalse del Ebro: basin of the river Ebro (which flows into the Mediterranean Sea) and the river Duero (which flows into the Atlantic Ocean)

As well as the Picos de Europa National Park, there are the Santoña, Victoria and Joyel Marshes Natural Park, the Macizo de Peña Cabarga Natural Park, the Natural park of Cabarceno, the Oyambre Natural Park and the Saja-Besaya Natural Park.
