Basque Country, (País Vasco), lies in the north of Spain but is part of a larger region (which includes Navarra and parts of southern France) sharing a unique cultural heritage and identity. The climate is oceanic (wet) in the north and more continental (warmer and drier) inland. The Ebro valley in the south is Mediterranean (dry).

Rich in natural resources, traditional and modern industry the Basque territory is very busy and one of the wealthiest regions in Spain. Major road and rail connections, three airports and two seaports (Bilbao to Portsmouth Ferry) strategically link the northwest and centre of Spain with the rest of Europe. The Autonomous Community is made up of 3 provinces:

Álava (Araba): In the southern part of Pais Vasco. The northern region is a high plateau called Llanada Alavesa (Álava plains) where the capital Vitoria-Gasteiz is located and the vast majority live. The rivers Zadorra and Bayas flow in southern direction from the mountains to the Ebro river Valley and the Rioja Alavesa wine region, which shares the Mediterranean characteristics of other Ebro Valley zones.
Biscay (Vizcaya,Bizkaia): is in the northwestern part of the País Vasco with a 154 km long coast line of black rocks, high cliffs and small inlets, typical of the Costa Cantabria . In the central part of the province you find the main river's valleys of Nervion, Ibaizabal and Kadagua. In the south are mountain ranges, which form the water divide of the Atlantic and Mediterranean basins. Roughly 35% of the population lives here
Guipúzcoa (Gipuzkoa): in the northeast of the País Vasco is the smallest province in Spain. Its coast line is 92km long. The capital is San Sebastián, with a popular and beautiful coastline, where about a quarter of the population lives.
