| Osona |
An inland region of Barcelona in the north of
the province, Osona borders with Girona in the
north and the regions of Bergueda, Bages and Vallès
Oriental. Rich in Romanesque art and architecture,
Osona is an interesting region with one of the
highest concentration of Catalan speakers in Catalonia.
Situated in a fairly narrow valley between the
pre-Pyrenees and the Serralda mountain ranges,
Osona is largely an agricultural region with many
small towns and villages surrounding the historic
capital of Vic, which is situated in the centre
of the region. |

Vic
Vic is a well-known historic town in the centre
of Osona with a population of over 30,000. The
town was once an Iberian capital, later becoming
an important Roman centre and then a wealthy
medieval market town. Part of the old Roman
temple can still be seen in the town. Vic’s
18th century cathedral is next to the arcaded
old town square. Vic houses the Museu Episcopal,
interesting for its archaeological finds and
early Catalan paintings, as well as an important
collection of Romanesque art including many
11th and 12th century wooden sculptures and
frescoes which have been rescued from local
Pyrenean churches in the region. Vic is famous
for its cold sausages, on sale in the market
and in shops around the town. Still a thriving
market town, Vic’s market takes place
on Tuesdays and Saturdays in the huge main square.
Vic is 50km from Barcelona on the C-17 highway.
It can also be reached by train, the RENFE station
is on the line that runs from Barcelona to the
Pyrenees and on to France. |
