Synonymous and world famous for its wines, Rioja is the second-smallest autonomous community in Spain with the smallest population. Located south of the Cantabrian Mountains, following the River Ebro depression, Rioja is protected from the winds of northern Spain and benefits from a continental micro-climate. Approximately half of the population lives in the capital Logroño which is situated on the Ebro River and many of the municipalities have fewer than 200 people.

Several rivers cut through the mountains in the south of the region - the Sierra Cebollera, Picos de Urbion, Sierra Demanda - and the central plateau of La Rioja including the Río Oja from which the province derives its name.

The three principal regions of the Rioja are the Rioja Alavesa, Rioja Alta and Rioja Baja with each area producing its own unique expression of Rioja wine. The Rioja Alta comarca gets more rain than Rioja Baja which is more mountainous, exposed ,and has a drier Mediterranean climate.
